THINGS AS THEY ARE | CATHERINE BURGESS

In the early 1990’s Edmonton sculptor Catherine Burgess, who work in steel, used a table format upon which were played out various personal narratives suggested by the interrelationships of a number of abstract forms. In her new work, these forms have evolved into larger, discrete objects which sit on the floor while the tabletop has become a large think plate of steel which hangs on the wall above and behind them. In other words, life history, which informs the new work no longer provides the physical support. While they continue the “Things As They Are” theme of the table pieces, these new works allow for differing perspectives on the same set of forms alluding to the changing circumstances we bring to each act of perception and understanding, despite the background of experience suggested by the wall plates.
