SAAG Artist Workshop Series: Embroidery with Lan "Florence" Yes
Join artist Lan “Florence” Yee for the first of our 2025 Artist Workshop series. This workshop invites participants to explore their relationship to text and textile imagery together through hand embroidery. As seemingly mundane images and words flood our everyday lives (through signage, templates, media, and more), artists can parse out their deeply affective nature by taking away the veneer of neutrality. Text and textile imagery function as mutual interventions into each other’s spheres of influence.
Participants are asked to bring both text (eg. words, notes, lists, signs, conversations stuck in your head, etc.) and fabrics that may be significant or yet-to-be fully known to you (eg. a handkerchief, t-shirt, patterned cloth, etc.). This workshop will include creative text prompts to respond to your objects. We will combine the text and textile through two basic hand-embroidery techniques that Lan will demonstrate, the satin stitch and the brick stitch. Embroidery hoops, markers, needles, and various thread colours will be provided.
Lan “Florence” Yee is a visual artist and cultural worker based in Tkaronto/Toronto & Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang/Montreal. They collect text in underappreciated places and ferment it until it is too suspicious to ignore. Lan’s work has been exhibited at the Textile Museum of Canada (2023-24), Darling Foundry (2022), the Toronto Museum of Contemporary Art (2021), and the Gardiner Museum (2019), among others. They obtained a BFA from Concordia University and an MFA from OCAD U as a Joseph- Armand Bombardier SSHRC scholar. They are a recipient of the William and Meredith Saunderson Prizes for Emerging Artists (2023). Lan is a member of JIA Foundation as curator of the Chinatown House MTL..

Bletcher Hour
Join us for Bletcher Hour, the Gallery’s monthly critical reading group. Readings explore key themes of the exhibitions and current events, with the intent to deepen our understanding of the artworks and their context within our community.
This month we will be reading the introduction and first chapter of As We Have Always Done: Indigenous Freedom through Radical Resistance by Leanne Betasamosake Simpson. In this book, Simpson locates Indigenous political resurgence as a practice rooted in uniquely Indigenous theorizing, writing, organizing, and thinking. She makes clear that its goal can no longer be cultural resurgence as a mechanism for inclusion in a multicultural mosaic. Instead, she calls for unapologetic, place-based Indigenous alternatives to the destructive logics of the settler colonial state, including heteropatriarchy, white supremacy, and capitalist exploitation. This book was recommended by artist Tania Willard, who's exhibition Practices of Suffusion is on display in our Upstairs Gallery until January 11th, 2025.
This program is free to attend. Please contact Heather Kehoe, Program & Event Coordinator, to register. Readings are sent as PDFs in advance of the event. If you cannot make it in person, online attendance options are available.

Articulations with Jared Tailfeathers
Come visit the Southern Alberta Art Gallery to see multidisciplinary Artist Jared Tailfeathers (Sikomh Kokomii - Calling Crane) from Kainai Nation read and share a few selections from his new book “The Art Of Making: Rediscovering the Blackfoot Legacy”, show some of his art, music, research photos, share copies of the book and talk about Blackfoot art history in the territory.
"A journey of growth and rediscovery. A chance as a colonized Blackfoot person to get to know who I am culturally, historically, and literally within the boundaries of my traditional territory. I want to help connect old names and practices to old places. Exploration of the evidence of art and methods of making that are still on the land as part of my cultural connection, and contextualizing those methods into my contemporary practice.
I focused this desire into a multi-year project that included contemporary art and research that became the book "The Art of Making: Rediscovering the Blackfoot Legacy Vol 1", the research is framed as a narrative of personal discovery and community connection. The book also documents the creation of contemporary multidisciplinary art (music, luthiery, sculpture, painting, toolmaking and instrument making), and resources found at important sites based on traditional land use. Timelines that flesh out the story of Canada from pre-contact to the present day. Relationships with the animals, resources, and with neighboring Indigenous Nations and settler communities. How all of these events and relationships influenced the methods of making pre-contact to the present day."
This event is free for Gallery members, with regular admission, and for attendees that self-identify as Indigenous. Please check in at the Gallery’s front desk when you arrive.
Jared will be hosting a book launch event at Analog Books on Friday November 8, 6:30 - 8:30 PM. To register or to purchase a copy of “The Art of Making” for yourself visit https://www.analogbooks.net/events/1235120241108.

Crafternoon at Word on the Street
Join the Gallery at the Lethbridge Public Library’s Word on the Street Festival. We are excited to feature artist Kellen Spencer, who will be leading a papermaking demo and sharing examples of handmade paper from local artists. Join us to meet the artist, learn more about this interactive process, and celebrate the literary arts!
Kellen Spencer is a Lethbridge-based visual artist, and printmaker whose practice examines the connection between residential redevelopment, memory, and the notion of home. By documenting changes in the neighborhood where he lives, Kellen sees the home as a place to unearth past memories, and to question future cycles of housing demolition, construction, and gentrification.
His interest in papermaking is complementary to his work in printmaking as it invites a material exploration that is critical to making a successful print; like understanding flour is to making delicious bread or choosing suitable lumber is to homebuilding. The tactile processes involved in creating handmade paper also offer a unique way to understand a material that has uses which we encounter almost every day.
In 2018, Kellen completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Print Media at the Alberta College of Art + Design (ACAD), and was the recipient of the Board of Governor’s Graduating Student Award. His printed works have recently been included in exhibitions at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG), Casa Lethbridge and the John B. Aird Gallery in Toronto, Ontario.
