In 1990, when a group of prominent Canadian artists toured the Oldman River by raft and canoe, they spent a brief sojourn at the historical McIntyre Ranch, located 35 miles east of Cardston, near Magrath, Alberta. Thirteen years later, on May 29 to June 5th of 2004, eighteen artists, writers and a filmmaker, a few of whom had participated in the previous gatherings, joined to share a week of inspiration in this unique locale. The work from that experience has resulted in the second McIntyre Ranch Project exhibition.

This exhibition is comprised of work as diverse as the artists themselves. Sculpture, photography, video, painting, drawing, and photogravure works reflect the artists’ experience of the land and the ranch. From a large perspectival section of barbed wire to vast prairie photographs, this is a landmark exhibition celebrating the long history of the ranch, Alberta’s centennial, and the Southern Alberta Art Gallery’s dedication to the finest of contemporary Canadian artists.
